Survivor 51 premiered on Wednesday night.
Viewers got two hours to meet the 21 new castaways.
The new season is in Fiji, with a $1 million prize on the line.
As Tea on TV previously reported, a twist later this season could make that prize $2 million.
Survivor 51, Episode 1 recap from September 23
The season began with 21 new castaways on a large boat. Host Jeff Probst arrived on his own boat. It was time to explain what would happen next. He got lots of applause.
“Permanent uncertainty,” Jeff told them. He wanted them to remember as the season began.
Jeff gave the players two minutes to get anything they could off the boat. Four rafts were in the water, and the players had to decide what supplies to take. After two minutes, everyone had to jump in the ocean. It was a hard process to get the rafts to shore.
No tribes had been determined, and no introductions had been made.
Everyone finally got to shore, and people began networking.
“The energy was psychotic,” noted Ana Sani from Ontario.
Patt Cannaday from Washington, D.C., said she lost her pants in the chaos.
Later, someone spotted a sign on the beach. They all ran to read it. It revealed that one player would start the game alone. The castaways had to decide who would do it.
After some debate, Lewis Kelly from Puerto Rico volunteered. They made him a Spirit Tunnel as Lewis went off down a path.
Without direction, most of the remaining castaways began standing around.
After some time passed, a helicopter flew past and dropped something. It was a bag with the buffs.
Also, that’s when they learned there were only two tribes.
Survivor 51 castaways get their tribes
Each tribe had to select a negotiator to help split up supplies.
Danny Kilby from Ontario volunteered for Toka (Yellow Tribe). Kristin Flickinger from California was selected for Savu (Purple Tribe). Negotiations for supplies then commenced.
Kilby wound up with the shelter and building supplies. Kristin got the pot, machete, flint, and fishing gear. It seemed clear which tribe had the advantage.
Lewis Kelly begins Survivor 51 on his own
Later, we saw Lewis arrive at Exile Island. The twist has returned. As he explained it, the island was very unwelcoming. Lewis may regret this choice.
The next morning, Lewis compared Exile Island to being in a penitentiary.
Suddenly, Jeff Probst walked in. He sat down with Lewis. Jeff revealed that Lewis had already been there for 30 hours.
Lewis was told he would not participate in the first Immunity Challenge or Tribal Council. But he was safe for now.
Jeff then gave Lewis a shot to win a Hidden Immunity Idol.
If Lewis could chop down a mast quickly enough, he would get the Idol at the top. But his hourglass had an indeterminate amount of time. That was part of the challenge. Lewis then set to it.
He failed.
Who is on each Survivor 51 tribe?
A segment of the episode featured introductions at each beach.
Below is a breakdown of each tribe:
- Yellow (Toka): Jenna, Devin, Aaliyah, Jelly, Mike, Thien, Maggie, Danny, Brady, and Patt.
- Purple (Savu): Linnea, Ori, Rob, Carter, Alexis, Kristin, Sharonda, Eric, Christian, and Ana.
At Toka, Devin became the leader. And he didn’t believe Jenna’s story about being a wedding photographer. She is one. But he went around telling people that Jenna was lying. It immediately made Jenna a target.
Over at Savu, Eric went fishing with the gear. While Eric was gone, Rob took the chance to claim Eric was missing and presumably looking for a Hidden Immunity Idol. The rest of the tribe searched for him, and they all became suspicious. Eric returned two hours later, with a very small fish. But he had become the target.
Later, Rob looked for (and found) a Hidden Immunity Idol. He didn’t even have to deal with a Beware Advantage this time.
Game time for Survivor 51 in Fiji
When the players arrived for the Immunity Challenge, Jeff explained the season.
This is the new “Open Era” where anything from the first 50 seasons can happen. All twists, advantages, and game mechanics are possible.
Jeff also let the cast vote on whether or not to have a Fire Making Challenge this season. They kept it in place.
Jeff later revealed that the Coin Flip has returned. If someone wins the coin flip, the prize pool increases to $2 million. If they lose the coin flip, they are eliminated, and the prize moves forward to Survivor 52. This means the prize pool for Survivor 52 could become $3 million. It will keep increasing until someone wins the coin flip.
The first Immunity Challenge on Survivor 51
The Immunity Challenge featured an intense obstacle course. It ended with a puzzle.
Savu won Immunity. Toka would have to go to Tribal Council.
The first Tribal Council on Survivor 51
Jenna, Devin, Aaliyah, Jelly, Mike, Thien, Maggie, Danny, Brady, and Patt went to the first Tribal Council.
Jenna was still a target, but Aaliyah’s name came up after she struggled in the challenge.
Brady’s behavior during the challenge also made him vulnerable.
The ladies told Jenna about Devin targeting her. Later, Brady learned that people thought he was being too intense. He didn’t handle it well. You might even say his reaction was intense.
Aaliyah and Jenna were mentioned as the targets in front of Jeff. There were many side conversations.
Jenna and Aaliyah each played their Shot in the Dark. Neither found safety.
The votes were as follows (in order): Jenna, Aaliyah, Jenna, Aaliyah, Aaliyah, Aaliyah, and Aaliyah.
Aaliyah Puglia was the first person voted off Survivor 51.
