One Chicago fans got some great news heading into the weekend.
Questions about the futures of Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. were answered.
As the current seasons approach their finales, this is exactly the news we wanted.
Currently, NBC is airing Med Season 11, Fire Season 14, and P.D. Season 13 on Wednesday nights.
NBC has renewed the One Chicago shows
It’s official. NBC has ordered more episodes of Med, Fire, and P.D.
Med Season 12, Fire Season 15, and P.D. Season 14 are coming this fall.
This sweeping announcement will let fans breathe a sigh of relief.
While great ratings led to an expectation of renewal, the television landscape can be unpredictable.
Costs have risen. That meant fewer episodes and some cuts to screentime for cast members. One trick that the shows do is to have a character be off-screen for a few episodes. That means the actor or actress isn’t getting paid for that particular episode, keeping the show more solvent.
Hopefully, NBC hasn’t cut back on any more episodes. We already dipped from 22 last year to 21 this year. Fewer episodes mean more weeks off during the television season.
A report from Deadline addresses contracts. Last year, Fire had to convince star Taylor Kinney to sign a new deal, and this offseason, Med has to get S. Epatha Merkerson on board. Also, there are likely additional big names in flux. Stay tuned on that front.
Over the years, fans of the shows have grown accustomed to the departure of favorite characters. So we shouldn’t expect anyone to be safe as the season finales arrive this May.
“We’re not going anywhere! One Chicago returns this fall on @NBC and Peacock,” reads an exciting Instagram post.
More news from the Wednesday night shows
Chicago Fire has a new chief, and here is where you know him from. Previously, the city fired Chief Dom Pascal. This means some big changes are coming at Firehouse 51. Will Dermot Mulroney’s exit be as hard on the fans as Eamonn Walker’s departure (he played Chief Wallace Boden)?
Elsewhere, Med is heading toward baby time for Dr. Hannah Asher (played by Jessy Schram). How will Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber) handle it all?
Also, over on P.D., a big move is coming for Officer Adam Ruzek (Patrick Flueger) and his wife, Detective Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati).
Med airs at 8/7c, Fire airs at 9/8c, and P.D. airs at 10/9c on Wednesday nights on NBC. Previous episodes of the shows are streaming on Peacock.
