Below Deck’s Captain Sandy Yawn scammed: ‘All of our money – Gone’

Captain Sandy Yawn from Below Deck and Below Deck Med was reportedly scammed.

“All of our money. Gone. Emotionally, we were wrecked,” Yawn recently told Fox News Digital.

The alleged scam was perpetrated by their former contractor, Spencer Calvert.

Yawn and her wife hired Calvert in 2020. He was to build their $1.6 million home in Jacksonville, Florida.

Many other families also contracted with Calvert, amounting to 33 homes.

The allegation is that many of the homes went unfinished, including the one Yawn and her wife had contracted.

TMZ reported that Calvert was charged with “organized scheme to defraud, misapplication of construction funds, and grand theft.”

He did reach a plea deal, but that was rejected after the alleged victims (Yawn and others) objected to it.

A revised plea deal is now in place, with Calvert facing a possible 10 years in prison. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for April 2026.

Captain Sandy Yawn speaks about the alleged scam

“All of our money. Gone. Emotionally, we were wrecked. But here’s the deal: like, I love God, Leah loves God — we love God. So we knew that we were going to get through this because, no matter what, as long as you do the next right thing and just show up in life and show others by your example how you walk through things, then that’s what it’s about, right?” Captain Sandy Yawn stated.

Yawn also revealed how she and her wife reacted when they learned that Calvert was allegedly defrauding them.

“I think we both cried. And then you feel betrayal. And when you have emptied your bank account already – we started calling our friends trying to borrow money to finish our house. Yeah, because we spent all our money on our house,” the Below Deck star added.

As for Calvert’s explanation, his attorney spoke with Entertainment Weekly in 2024.

“Although I cannot comment on the evidence at this time, our investigation has revealed that my client was a respected home builder and businessman for many years. As in all businesses, market conditions sometimes create unexpected challenges. Supply chain and work force issues can impact construction costs which in turn can cause a ripple effect on the home building industry resulting in financial loss,” Calvert’s lawyer told EW.
