Is LaRoyce Hawkins leaving Chicago P.D.? Kevin Atwater evolves

Chicago P.D. fans have become worried that LaRoyce Hawkins is leaving the show.

His character, Officer Kevin Atwater, was pondering life decisions during the latest episode.

“Maybe I’m just better off alone,” Atwater told Detective Kim Burgess as he struggled with sending a text for a big chunk of the episode.

Atwater clearly missed Tasha Fox (played by Karen Obilom). As a reminder, Fox left the Chicago Police Department and moved to Miami. She invited him along, but he wasn’t ready to pull the trigger.

Later in the episode, a car salesman insinuated that Atwater was a man who knew what he wanted and would go for it. Was this foreshadowing? Did Atwater only need to hear someone else say it?

Atwater was in the process of buying a 1968 Ford Mustang (a car made famous in Bullitt and Gone in 60 Seconds), but someone killed the dealer and stole the car right from under Atwater.

How about that ending to Chicago P.D. Season 13, Episode 11? Fox returned to Chicago and told Atwater that she’s pregnant. Cliffhanger!

LaRoyce Hawkins speaks about Chicago P.D. and Kevin Atwater

LaRoyce Hawkins appeared on the One Chicago Podcast and spoke about how he is “very excited” about this character development.

“There’s a difference between a guy that’s solving crimes and saving lives and a guy that’s solving crimes and saving lives, and he’s about to be a father soon. Chad is helping me navigate through the small things that I can think about that help,” Hawkins revealed while addressing executive producer Chad Saxton.

Hawkins’ excitement suggests he is pleased with Atwater’s evolution. If the writers and producers give him more to work with, hopefully, he sticks around for many years to come.

“There’s a nature to being a father on crime shows where you hope everything works out. You know, I’m optimistic about everything working out. And you know, it’s hard to say. It’s not that up to me, but it’s just like fatherhood. It’s like, you don’t know what you’re gonna get,” Hawkins added in the interview.

Will everything work out? Tune in Wednesday nights at 10/9c on NBC to find out.
