Several people on the Survivor 49 cast took to calling host Jeff Probst “uncle” this season. It happened again at the beginning of the November 19 episode, when Kristina Mills referred to Jeff as “Uncle J” when the players arrived at the Reward Challenge.
This continued a trend in which the players have called Jeff “uncle” during challenges or at Tribal Council. He never seems to mind it, and the players seem to enjoy it. But that hasn’t been the case for many fans on social media. A loud contingent of fans has been complaining since it first began.
Some Survivor fans don’t want Jeff Probst called ‘uncle’
Below are just a few of the Survivor fans who complained about Jeff Probst being called “uncle” during the latest episode. Some of the posts have prompted fans to respond in defense of those players.
“This ‘Uncle Jeff’ and ‘Uncle J’ crap needs to end! #Survivor49 #Survivor,” posted one grumpy fan.
“It’s a cultural thing. Not that deep,” someone responded.
“It’s NOT a cultural thing! They’ve just started doing this nonsense in the last few season and not doing on BB too. It’s stupid!” the OP added.
“I can’t stand them saying ‘Uncle’ Jeff. He’s not your freaking uncle, he’s the host. Stop it with the Uncle Jeff stuff. Does it bug anyone else? #Survivor #Survivor49,” posted someone else.
“No cuz it’s a term of endearment in the black community. There are other things in this world to fixate on buddy,” someone responded.
“The combination of “Uncle Jeff” on Survivor and all the “Let’s goooooo!” action on the Amazing Race has made this Wednesday lineup the most annoying in a long time,” another fan recently wrote.
“I was just saying that, it’s so annoying. I may stop watching Amazing Race this season and just find out who wins later,” another fan agreed.
So what do you think? Is referring to Jeff Probst as “Uncle Jeff” by players harmless, cultural, or endearing? Or does it frustrate you? Let us know in the comments!
