The Challenge rookie Blue Kim made an early impression on viewers familiar and unfamiliar with her from her previous reality TV show.
She also caught the attention of a castmate who seemed to criticize one of her scenes in the show.
The newest season of The Challenge, titled Vets and New Threats, is the 41st installment in MTV’s long-running competition series.
Blue is among the rookie threats. In interrogation scenes, each of them got grilled by host TJ Lavin about their backgrounds, preparation, and motivation to win.
The Big Brother star had funny remarks, including calling TJ “girl” and surprising him with one of the reasons she wants to win The Challenge.
However, her conversation with TJ was also an emotional one. That became the focus of a castmate’s remarks, prompting Blue to fire back.
Castmate criticized Blue’s Day Zero scene
As fans know, The Challenge features a mix of humor, intense drama, and emotional moments, including Blue Kim’s interrogation scene with TJ.
When asked why she wants to win The Challenge, she opened up about how her mother had suffered traumatic brain injuries and persevered through a lot.
A teary-eyed Blue told TJ she wanted to use some of the prize money to give her mother a real vacation to Korea.
On MTV’s Official The Challenge Podcast, fellow rookie Izzy Fairthorne (Survivor) called out that scene while speaking to co-hosts Devyn Simone and Da’Vonne Rogers.
“The first interview is like five minutes, and you’re crying. I’m like, ‘Is there something behind that?’ Right?” she asked, adding, “That’s what I would say because we all have a story.”
“But for a five-minute interview, your first interview to go in. Is there a bit of manipulation behind that?” Izzy speculated on the podcast.
“Are we talking about Blue?” they asked Izzy a few times, and she laughed, replying, “She’s one of them.”
Blue fired back at her castmate’s criticism
Taking to her official X account, Blue reacted to what Izzy said about her Day Zero interview scene.
“oh goddd forbid a girl cries over her mom’s BRAIN aneurysms,” she posted.
In a follow-up to her original message, she elaborated upon her initial statement. Blue asked why others have a problem with “others being highly emotional when talking about highly emotional and personal things.”
“it’s a 5 minute interview where I’m talking about YEARS of endless hospital visits & family trauma DAMN,” Blue wrote.
It’s unclear what Izzy meant by ‘manipulation’ from Blue, beyond maybe getting fans to like her. TJ had no involvement in assigning partners for rookies or veterans. Instead, it was determined by how the competitors finished a race up a mountain and down to The Challenge house.
Blue ended up partnering with Derek Chavez, a finalist on The Challenge: Battle of the Eras.
Before Day Zero, Blue said in a promo that she disliked Johnny Bananas and wouldn’t team up with him on the show.
It seems her debut season of The Challenge will bring fans and critics, much like her debut on Big Brother.
The Challenge: Vets and New Threats airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on MTV.
