James Van Der Beek passed away at the age of 48. The Dawson’s Creek star went public with his battle against colorectal cancer in November 2024.
He was initially diagnosed in the summer of 2023, but didn’t share his struggles until well over a year later. Legions of Dawson’s Creek fans rallied around the family and continued to keep up with his journey.
When the cancer was caught and diagnosed, it was Stage 3. Van Der Beek was optimistic while battling for his life, always being positive whenever possible.
Dawson’s Creek was his big break, and the character of Dawson Leery will forever be part of Xennials’ core memories. From there, he had bit roles until he landed Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23, where he played himself for 26 episodes. He also did voice acting, and was Boris in Disney’s Vampirina.
During his stint on Dancing with the Stars, Van Der Beek was put in front of millions of people again. And in 2025, he appeared on The Masked Singer.
Unfortunately, though, he was too sick to take part in the Dawson’s Creek reunion, which was put together for Van Der Beek and F Cancer.
James Van Der Beek taped Dawson’s Creek appearance
Despite being unable to attend the Dawson’s Creek reunion in person, James Van Der Beek pre-taped a message for those in attendance. In it, he looked frailer than he had during previous appearances since his diagnosis.
Unfortunately, he wanted to be at the reunion more than anything. Van Der Beek revealed he had been looking forward to it for months, and it had been in the works since January 2025. It was put together by his Dawson’s Creek co-star and friend, Michelle Williams.
His wife and six children were in attendance for the event, though. They flew to New York City from their home in Texas to be there. His two daughters sang the Dawson’s Creek theme song with the cast, and the rest of the family joined everyone on stage.
James Van Der Beek’s legacy goes on
James Van Der Beek leaves behind his wife of 15 years, Kimberly Brook. They had six children, four daughters and two sons. The couple has been outspoken about how their family grew, and explained the losses they suffered.
His love for his family was his driving force, and he put up the bravest fight against cancer for the last two years.
