Mel Owens’ ageism has The Golden Bachelor fans ready to riot

Gerry Turner saw the Golden Bachelor fans turn on him after his quickie divorce from first-season winner Theresa Nist. But Gerry’s spot as the biggest Bachelor Nation villain didn’t last long as Mel seemingly said, “Hold my beer.”

The Season 2 Golden Bachelor star hasn’t even filmed yet, and he’s already seeing fans turn against him after his casting demands surfaced. He claims he won’t consider picking a partner over 60 years old—even though he is 66.

Making matters worse, NBCUniversal senior reporter Mike Sington reported that he also told casting execs to “stay away from artificial hips and the wigs. ”

As you can imagine, this has gone over about as well as a screen door on a submarine with some refusing to watch the upcoming season and others begging ABC to recast the lead role ASAP.

@BachelorABC should recast Mel Owens immediately. We want Charles L for Golden Bachelor! But if that’s not possible, please at least give us someone who is actually interested in dating the cast of golden women who are 60,” one commenter wrote in response to his demands.

Another wrote, “This is certainly the kind of man a 45-year old woman would want.”

Others called him “shallow” and a “Total loser.”

Suffice it to say, this is not a great way to start a season that hasn’t even filmed yet.

Bachelor in Paradise is mixing it up with old and young

It seems everything about Bachelor Nation is controversial these days, including the upcoming season of Bachelor in Paradise.

The spinoff is finally returning, this time for a slot in ABC’s summer schedule instead of the original fall lineup that it had before. It hasn’t been announced yet, but we’re assuming The Golden Bachelor will come in the fall.

But first, BIP is coming on Monday, July 11 and they’re mixing up cast from the original Bachelor and Bachelorette shows with the Goldens, so we’ll have cast members in their 20s and in their 70s all looking for love in the same place. What could go wrong?

Even Tanner Tolbert, who met his wife Jade Roper on Season 2, thought mixing the older cast members in was kind of weird. He spoke about it recently on Kaitlyn Bristowe’s Off the Vine podcast, saying he didn’t want to be getting it on in the Boom Boom Room with “grandpa” in the next room. We kind of feel him on this.
